Three times a week ISR faculty and staff gather in the lobbies of the ISR buildings for a 15-minute exploration of the area as part of the ISR Walking Club.
Launched in May, the free club will meet through August to promote wellness at ISR. Members meet at 10:15 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the ISR-Thompson lobby and at 1:30 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday in the ISR-Perry lobby. The club is the brainchild of ISR MHealthy Wellness Champion Kathleen O’Sullivan-Cook and the ISR Health and Wellness Committee that she heads. Why 15 minutes? The short time frame allows faculty and staff to get a quick break and some fresh air.
“It’s amazing – just 15 minutes,” said Diana Armistead, a Research Center for Group Dynamics research administrator and club member. “The walks serve as my mid-morning recharge.”
The club has about 30 members and plans to create an incentive program to boost attendance, O’Sullivan-Cook said.
The club is part of several new initiatives from the ISR Health and Wellness Committee. The committee’s mission is to address all the dimensions of wellness at ISR, including physical well-being, mental and emotional well-being, and occupational health. The committee has also sponsored an ergonomics health presentation, a relationship support group, and a vegetarian cooking workshop.
The committee receives some support from ISR Perspectives, part of the Director’s Advisory Committee, but has no official budget. O’Sullivan-Cook said they are working to cultivate partnerships and gain sponsorships to fund future initiatives.
